Athens Services to increase rates for Monrovians
Monrovia waste services provider Athens Services will increase their rates by 4.32 percent, effective July 1. For the typical commercial customer, this means an increase of about $7.13, from an average $165/month to $172/month. Residential customers who use the 90-gallon barrels will see a smaller increase of about $1.24 dollars per month, from an average $29/month.
According to City Manager Oliver Chi, the rate increase is part of costs of operation. It also factors in the mandated California minimum wage increases. Athens is only authorized to raise rates by no more than 5 percent every year, at the start of July.
But customers feeling the financial crunch shouldn’t worry, Chi said. Earlier this year, the city launched a program for Athens customers where city staff would work with the customer to manage on trash and recycling bills. Run by Management Analyst Alex Tachiki, the program can be contacted at (626) 932-5553 or via e-mail at email@example.com.
