Duarte killer to be arraigned on Tuesday
Arraignment will be held tomorrow for a man suspected of killing his neighbor in Duarte on Friday night. Bail for suspected killer Luis Valdes-Santillan was set at $1 million dollars and he will be arraigned on Tuesday in Alhambra, according to Lt. Eddie Hernandez with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.
Valdes-Santillan allegedly shot Duarte resident Gabriel Alejandro De La Torre at a backyard party on Friday night. According to Hernandez, De La Torre and Valdes-Santillan lived in separate homes on the same lot. The two men got in an argument, and Valdes-Santillan reportedly retrieved a gun from his home prior to the shooting.
De La Torre died at the scene. Valdes-Santillan left the scene of the shooting in a white pick-up truck, authorities said.
Deputies chased the suspect who was travelling east on the Interstate 210. He surrendered on the Azusa Avenue offramp and was arrested, according to Hernandez.
De La Torre is survived by his wife and three stepdaughters. According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, De La Torre emigrated to the US from Mexico as a teenager, and worked as a subcontracting electrician.
“My daughters are devastated. They loved their uncle,” De La Torre’s brother-in-law Bobby Serna told the Tribune.
