Duarte man charged with murder
A Duarte man suspected in the slaying of his neighbor faces eight felony counts related to the incident, officials said Wednesday.
Suspect Luis Valdes-Santillan Tuesday did not enter a plea at his scheduled arraignment in Alhambra.
Valdes-Santillan is next due in court on Sept. 13. He is being held on $4.3 million bail.
Valdes-Santillan allegedly shot Duarte resident Gabriel Alejandro De La Torre at a backyard party. The party took place Friday night. According to Lt. Eddie Hernandez, De La Torre and Valdes-Santillan lived in separate homes on the same lot. The two men got in an argument, and Valdes-Santillan reportedly retrieved a gun from his home prior to the shooting.
De La Torre died at the scene. Valdes-Santillan left the scene of the shooting in a white pick-up truck, authorities said.
Deputies chased the suspect who was traveling east on the 210 Freeway. Valdes-Santillan surrendered to deputies on the Azusa Avenue offramp, according to Hernandez.
Funds to benefit De La Torre’s family are being collected online at www.gofundme.com/2ksz74hg.
