Arcadia museum named for deceased ex-mayor
The Arcadia City Council decided last night to name the Arcadia Museum Education Center after Floretta Lauber, who died on Aug. 1. Mayor Tom Beck called it a fitting memorial to Arcadia’s first female mayor, due to Lauber’s contributions to the Center.
“Many have said that without her, it wouldn’t have been built,” Beck said.
Lauber began her career as a member of the personnel board. She was also the first woman appointed to Arcadia’s Planning Commission, and became Arcadia’s first female City Council member in 1974, becoming mayor in 1976.
Lauber was a champion of the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage, helping to establish the Arcadia Historical Museum Foundation in 2010 and the Friends of the Arcadia Museum in 2013. Lauber was also president of the Arcadia Women’s Club and received the Arcadia Chinese Association Community Services Award in 2014.
