Raw Inspiration relaunches Monrovia street fair
Raw Inspiration’s management of the Monrovia Friday Night Street Fair begins Friday at 7 p.m., with the first of two “soft launches” meant to test new features before a grand opening on September 2.
According to City Manager Oliver Chi, new vendors will include vegetable farmers, meat and fish mongers, and florists. Raw Inspiration also worked with The Dog Zone to establish a pet café, where visitors can as drop-off their dogs while enjoying areas of the street fair where animals are not allowed. A revamped kids area with special entertainment, a changing area and a camel to entertain kids will also feature into Raw Inspiration’s plans. All these features will roll out over the next two weeks, and will be in place for the September 2 street fair, according to Chi.
Raw Inspiration is replacing Green Leaf Events Inc., brought in to assist previous organizers LA Party Works. Green Leaf was brought in after only three weeks of hiring LA Party Works. Hashing out a contract to have both companies run the fair was a difficult process, with Councilman Larry Spicer and Councilman Alexander Blackburn voting in opposition due to what they felt was a lack of transparency in the process.
When the issue of replacing Green Leaf altogether was raised, many residents and vendors rallied behind them. They said that Green Leaf said had saved the street fair after years of mismanagement.
“In all the years I have worked at the Friday night fair, I have never witnessed such a consistent vendor and customer attendance throughout the winter and spring season,” vendor Sandra Jaramillo told the City Council at the May 17 council meeting.
The City Council wasn’t impressed, and hired Raw Inspiration to manage the fair. When asked whether he still believes bringing in Raw Inspiration was the right answer, despite the perceived missteps, Chi had a simple answer.
“Absolutely,” he said. “We’ve been incredibly impressive with everything Raw Inspiration does.”
