Orchard Supply Hardware no threat, says Mayor
Orchard Supply Hardware, which just opened on Huntington Drive and Monterey Avenue, presented the Monrovia Area Partnership with a check for $5,000 at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday.
The Partnership, which provides a platform for local residents to volunteer in Monrovia, use the money in their “Care for Your Neighbor” project, which assists with home improvement projects for Monrovia residents. The company, whose Monrovia store is where Office Depot once was, makes it a point to partner with local groups for every new location.
Mayor Tom Adams acknowledged fears that a big business could hurt Monrovia’s mom and pop shops. But he also said that Monrovians have little to fear from Orchard.
“They tend to have a more neighborly presence about things,” Adams said. “So we’re pretty excited to have them coming to town.”
Store Manager Steve Rados echoed these sentiments. “We’re already well-accepted.” As store manager, he had the honor of presenting a 5,000 to the Monrovia Area Partnership on Wednesday.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
A week before opening, Orchard Supply Hardware representatives reached out to the Monrovia Area Partnership. Neighborhood Services Program Coordinator Ariel Tolefree-Williams immediately jumped at the chance to partner with a business that could help the Partnership provide essential community services to Monrovia.
“They have the same beliefs — Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” Tolefree-Williams said, citing the chain’s philosophy. “The Monrovia Area Partnership is all about that.”
Most of the money from Orchard will go towards small-scale projects, such as yard cleanup. The Partnership also hopes to get Orchard involved with Make a Difference Day, which sees volunteers across the country complete large-scale projects, such as tree-planting and neighborhood beautification. Orchard will continue to help the Partnership by providing technical expertise, resources and cash when needed.
Orchard Supply Hardware will have its its grand opening this weekend.
