Pasadena shooter sentenced to 181 years for triple murder

On Wednesday, a Superior Court sentenced John Smith to 181 years in prison for murdering three people and wounding two others during a shooting on July 12, 2014. Smith also fired rounds at a uniformed Pasadena police officer during the incident.

Smith had entered a plea deal to three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of assault on a police officer, all by the discharge of a firearm.

The shooting occurred during a domestic dispute, and Smith killed his ex-girlfriend, her father and a neighbor during the shooting, authorities said. More than 42 rounds were fired during the incident. After the shooting, Smith retreated into his residence and called 911. Dispatchers convinced Smith to surrender, and he was arrested by the Pasadena Police Department SWAT Team.

“I am very proud of the personnel involved in this effort and I am hopeful the conclusion of this case will bring closure to the victim’s families, our Pasadena First Responders, and our community,” Police Chief Phillip Sanchez said.
